Where does the money for the feed-in tariff come from?

The state and taxpayers do not foot the bill for the operators of renewable energy generation systems such as a direct PV investment. Green electricity is paid for with the electricity bill (EEG surcharge), just as nuclear power is billed to all end customers via the energy supplier. The EEG account is managed by the four German transmission system operators. In 2017, a total of 27.36 billion euros was paid in.

What obligations does the energy supplier have?

What do I need to know about financing if I want to purchase a PV system?

We don't need large sums of our own money to invest in photovoltaics. There are many financial institutions that can be considered as the first port of call for PV financing, starting with your own bank. The photovoltaic investment, including the feed-in tariff and PV insurance, can be assigned as collateral. In addition, there is the priority entry in the land register of the roof owner in favor of the bank and the contribution of equity capital. Only then are assets taken into consideration.

The debit intervals for the repayment of the PV investment are mainly semi-annual, for the interest monthly or quarterly. In the repayment-free initial period, we only paythe interest, which will build up a sustainable base for the following years on the PV account. We may also open a PV feed-in account with the financing bank, into which the PV remuneration is paid and from which all payments such as telephone bills, reserves, insurance, rent, regular VAT from the PV proceeds, etc. are deducted.

For VR banks and traditional savings banks , the "regional principle" applies if you want to invest in photovoltaics, which forces the institutions into a narrow geographical radius. They do not want to offer a large commitment beyond a certain area. Therefore, the photovoltaic investment or the buyer of the PV system must be located in the region.

PV investment with all-round protection: what is insured?

PV investment with installation insurance

This mainly covers risks that may occur between delivery of the goods and commissioning of the system. Reputable project developers always take out installation insurance for the PV investment. This covers, for example, the theft of components or the installation itself and any resulting consequential damage.

PV investment with liability insurance

Liability covers, for example, damage to third parties, such as in the event of a fire, if a firefighter receives a life-threatening electric shock while extinguishing the fire, is injured by falling system parts or is poisoned by hazardous smoke. Or, for example, the fire caused by our PV investment spreads to neighboring buildings.

Photovoltaic investment with loss of earnings insurance

Loss of earnings insurance compensates system owners for loss of earnings; loss of earnings is defined as the loss of revenue from the sale of electricity.

Photovoltaic investment with all-risk insurance

Without electronics insurance (also known as fully comprehensive insurance or all-risk insurance), it is best not to operate your own photovoltaic investment! It is an (unofficial) must for operators. The following is insured:

Sabotage or vandalism
Bite damage from animals, e.g. martens
Natural events: Lightning, storm, hail, flooding
Short circuit (cable damage), overvoltage, overcurrent Induction (magnetic field due to indirect lightning strike)
Operating errors Clumsiness, negligence of the operating personnel
Improper handling
Force majeure (e.g. snow pressure, fire, explosion and extinguishing damage caused by these events Water, mains water, moisture

What is indemnified and how high is the excess?

The repair costs. If repair is no longer possible, the replacement costs are compensated. Business interruption is also covered. This means that the feed-in revenue that you have lost within the agreed liability period due to insured damage is reimbursed. The excess for damage to the solar investment is 250 euros.

What modules are available for a direct photovoltaic investment?

Photovoltaic direct investment with crystalline modules:

These solar cells are made exclusively from silicon, the second most common element after oxygen. There are two different crystalline modules for a photovoltaic investment: monocrystalline and multicrystalline solar modules.

Standard monocrystalline solar cells can convert up to 22 percent of incident light into electricity, which is slightly more than multicrystalline solar cells, but they are more expensive to manufacture and purchase

Multicrystalline (polycrystalline) solar modules mean lower manufacturing costs for direct PV investments and are therefore cheaper and also slightly better in diffuse solar radiation. The efficiency is slightly lower than that of monocrystalline modules.

=> At present, polycrystalline modules are predominantly used worldwide and also in our country.

PV direct investment with thin-film modules:

In thin-film technology, the semiconductor material is applied as a wafer-thin layer on glass or metal foil. These layers are only a hundredth of the thickness of crystalline solar cells. They are divided into individual solar cells and electrically connected in series using a laser.

=> Although thin-film modules for a photovoltaic investment are very inexpensive, they are significantly less efficient than crystalline modules and require more than twice as much space.

Which inverter do we use for a direct PV investment?

For a direct PV investment, we only use inverters from Huawei

Huawei is a leading global provider of information technology and telecommunications solutions. Huawei is active in more than 170 countries and employs over 170,000 people. Of these, more than 70,000 work in research and development. More than 1/3 of the world's population and more than half of the German population use Huawei technology directly or indirectly.

The warranty period of the Huawei inverter for a direct photovoltaic investment is 5 years.

Tasks of a PV inverter for a PV direct investment

The electronics of the photovoltaic inverter continuously regulate the voltage and current of the solar generator so that it delivers the maximum possible power (MPP regulation)
It converts the direct current of the PV direct investment into standard household alternating current.
It records and stores the inverter's operating data and error messages so that operators and service personnel can monitor function and yields

Is a building permit required?

If the PV system is built on a roof , planning permission is generally not required. The PV system, whether parallel, on-roof or in-roof, is treated like a skylight. We do not need a permit if we do not build further than approx. one meter above the roof.

A permit is required for a solar installation as a PV investment on an open area. If you want to lease your farmland, lease your meadow or lease other land, you must apply to the relevant municipality for approval (F and B plan amendment). We are also not allowed to build on or near listed buildings without permission. It is not possible to invest in such a PV system without permission.

The issue of roofs containing asbestos should not be forgotten when investing in photovoltaics. There is a ban on building over and working on this type of roofing.

What does photovoltaic direct marketing mean for a PV investment?

If you investin photovoltaic systems with an output of over 100 kWp, you must have the electricity marketed directly from 01.01.2016.In the long term, a PV investment should be able to pay for itself even without state subsidies; direct photovoltaic marketing is intended to simplify market integration.

Instead of the EEG feed-in tariff, the operator of the solar system sells the electricity on the Leipzig electricity exchange EEX (European Energy Exchange) using the market premium model. The direct marketer of an energy trading company takes care of the sale of the electricity(currently approx. 4 - 5 cents per kWh).

Instead of receiving the entire remuneration from the energy supply company, the income for the system operator is made up of two different components:

The market value: the income that the direct marketer generates on the electricity exchange
The market premium: the difference between the direct marketer's income and the EEG remuneration rate

The market value is paid out by the direct marketer, while the market premium is paid out by the energy supply company.As is usually the case with EEG remuneration, the market premium, like the remuneration, is fed from the EEG levy account, which is managed by the four German transmission system operators.

After 20 years of EEG remuneration, you can continue to have the electricity from your photovoltaic investment sold on the electricity exchange by the direct marketer.

How can I sell the electricity from my PV investment after 20 years?

Can I expect electricity prices to rise?

In the past 10 years since 2005, electricity prices have almost doubled from 18.65 cents/kWh to 28.81 cents/kWh. It can also be assumed that the demand for electricity will continue to rise in the future. Transport is increasingly powered by electric motors and more and more electricity is needed in industry and private households.

In addition, the phase-out of nuclear energy has already been legally decided for 2022. This plays into your hands if you want to buy a PV investment, as you will still be able to sell the electricity profitably after 20 years.

Global photovoltaic installations continue to grow strongly, with 104.1 gigawatts newly installed worldwide in 2018 alone. In 2018, 40.3% of total electricity generation in Germany was generated by renewable energies: (19%) wind, (8%) solar, (9%) biomass and (4%) hydropower plants.

The German government's goal is to increase the percentage to a total of 80 percent by 2050.
